Ko Olina · steps from Aulani

See the whales without leaving your side of the island.

Three whale watching boats we love, all leaving from right around Ko Olina — hand-picked so you can spot humpbacks and still make it back for the lagoon.

Humpback season runs roughly November through April · peak January–March

Good to know

A quick word on whale season

Every winter, thousands of humpbacks swim about 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii's warm, shallow water to mate and have their calves. The leeward Ko Olina coast is one of the calmest, clearest places to watch them do it.

What you'll see

Spouts, tail and fin slaps, and full breaches — and later in the season, mothers cruising with brand-new calves.

Why the west side

Protected, glassy water and whales that pass close to shore, so the boat ride out to them is short and easy.

Respectful distance

By federal law, boats stay 100 yards from the whales — but the whales don't read the rules, and often swim closer on their own.

Ko Olina Ocean Adventures — Catamaran Snorkel Sail

Large catamaran · snorkel + dolphin & whale watching

A big, stable catamaran and the least rocky way out on the water — the one to book if anyone gets queasy. This 3½-hour midday sail cruises the Waianae coast for dolphins and seasonal humpbacks, then stops to snorkel. You're already right here, so pick the no-transportation rate and save $30 — it's a short walk, taxi, or rideshare from the resort.
